Start with the message
Note the claimed organisation and request without disclosing personal information. Urgency, a familiar-looking number or a convincing voice should not substitute for an independent check.
Use a trusted route
End an unexpected call and find the organisation’s contact details from an established official source or existing account documents. Do not rely solely on a number supplied during the call.
Keep a brief record
Save the time, displayed number and request if needed for a report. Avoid accusing an apparent number owner: the display may not identify the caller. Consult the FTC’s phone-scam guidance for official information.
